UEW Postgraduate Programmes entry Requirements

PhD Programmes

  1. Possess Researched Master’s Degree in the relevant field of study from an accredited institution.
  2. Obtain a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above in the course offered at the Master’s level.
  3. Have at least a grade “B” in the thesis/dissertation presented for the Master’s degree.
  4. Submit a research proposal of not less than 3000 words.
  5. Pass a selection interview.
  6. Applicants who wish to offer a PhD in Mathematics Education and PhD in Science Education must hold Researched Master’s degree in Mathematics Education and Science Education respectively.

PhD Educational Leadership-Winneba

Admission Requirements:

•  Applicants should possess a research Master’s degree in the relevant field of study.

•  Applicants must have obtained a cumulative average of 3.0 and above or equivalent grade in the coursework component of the Master’s degree and a grade B or above in the research project.

•  Applicants must have a Degree in Education or Diploma in Education.

•  Candidates must pass a selection interview to be organized by the Department.

i.  Include a research proposal that tells us what the candidate wants to research, how he/she intends to do it, and why the research project is worth doing (not more than ten (10) pages of (A4 sheets) 2.0 line spacing.

ii.  In addition to the detailed research proposal, please include a 200-word statement of intent with your application.

PhD. Music

Applicants must possess:

a) A researched Master’s Degree (M.Phil. by Research) from the University of Education, Winneba or any accredited university.

b) Applicants must pass a selection interview.

PhD. In Science

Applicant must possess

i. Mphil. in Science Education from the University of Education, Winneba or any recognised University.

ii. Mphil. in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Integrated Science and Science related programmes from a recognized university.

iii. M.Sc. in related sciences with research (with an education component/ postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent) from a recognized university.

iv. Must pass a selection interview.

M.Phil Economics

Applicants must:

a) Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or related programme of study at the tertiary level of education from recognized universities.

b) Pass a selection interview.

M.Phil English Education

Applicant must:

i. Possessing a good first degree with a minimum of second class (lower division) is required from candidates who have obtained B.A. or B.Ed (English).

ii. Candidates must provide supporting documents such as certificates, academic transcripts, project work/thesis and two (2) referees’ reports.

iii. Applicants must attend and pass a selection interview.

M. Phil. Teaching English As A Second Language

Applicant must:

i. Possess a good first degree with a minimum of second class (lower division) in any language.

ii. Applicant must be an English teacher in addition to (i) above.

iii. Applicants must attend and pass a selection interview.

M.Phil Educational Administration and Management

Applicants must:

a) Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from the University of Education or other Universities recognized by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the National Accreditation Board of Ghana.

b) Candidates with good honours (2nd class lower or better) degrees in other disciplines other than education are required to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.

c) Applicants must pass a selection interview.

M.Phil Early Childhood Education

Applicants must:

a. Possess a good first degree, (at least 2nd Class Lower) in Early Childhood Education, Basic Education, Special Education, Guidance and Counselling from the University of Education, Winneba or a recognized university.

b. Be computer literate.

NB: In addition to the above-stated requirements, applicants should have qualifications in Educational Studies (Diploma in Education or better).

c. Applicant must pass a selection interview.

M.Phil. Basic Education

 Applicant must:

a. Possess a Bachelor’s degree (not below second class lower division) in Basic Education from UEW or a recognized university.

b. Former UEW products who in addition to their diploma in Basic Education have a good Bachelor’s degree (not below second class lower division) in Humanities or the sciences.

c. Candidates must pass a selection interview.

M.Phil. Special Education

Applicant must:

a. Possess a Bachelor’s degree (not below second class lower division) in the relevant discipline.

b. A professional qualification (also in relevant subject/discipline) approved by the academic Board as being equivalent to a good Bachelor’s degree.

c. An academic transcript shall be required for admission.

d. Candidates must pass a selection interview.

M.Phil Chemistry Education-Winneba

Applicants should possess:

A

i. A good first degree in Chemistry from the University of Education, Winneba.

ii. A good first degree in Chemistry (with an education component) from a recognized university.

iii. A good first degree in Chemistry from a recognized university and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalent.

B. Former UEW products with Diploma in Science Education in addition to BSc in Chemistry from a recognized university are eligible to apply.

C. Applicants must pass the selection interview.

M.Phil. Science Education

Applicants should possess:

i. A good first degree in the Sciences with an Education  component from a recognised University

ii. A good first degree in the Sciences from a recognised University and a postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent

iii. A good first degree in the Sciences from recognised universities and a Diploma in Science Education from UEW.

M.Phil Geography

Applicants should:

i. Possess Second class lower or better in Geography or any related discipline.

ii. Pass the selection interview.

M.Phil Art Education

Applicants should possess:

i. A good first degree in a relevant discipline ( Studio Art, Art Education, Design, or  Art History) from a recognized tertiary institution

ii. A minimum of second class lower.

iii. A minimum average of “B” in the M.A. Art Education programme.

Other M. Phil Programmes

Applicants should possess:

A good Bachelor’s Degree with Education component (eg. B.Ed), from the University of Education (UEW) or its equivalent from a recognized University in the relevant field of study, or

i. A good Bachelor’s Degree  without Education e.g. (B.A, BSc) from an accredited university

ii. M.Ed. or equivalent qualifications with relevant course content. Such applicants may be required to do the M Phil programme within one year.

i. Applicants with good first degrees from any field of study can apply for Communication and Media Studies programmes.

ii. Applicants for the M.Phil./Ph.D.programmes should submit a proposal defining the specific area of interest, a brief description of any previous study conducted on the subject and a justification for the study ( Not more than four pages).

MBA (Accounting) And MBA (Finance)

a.  Applicants must hold a second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in finance, accounting, economics, and other business-related subjects.  Applications may also be considered from graduates in non-business areas with strong quantitative backgrounds.

b.  Be a professionally qualified accountant and a member of one of the Accountancy bodies constituting the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).

In addition to requirements (1) or (2) above, applicants must:

c.  Have at least two years relevant experience in the private or public sector

d.  Must be computer literate

e.  Pass a selection interview.

Criteria for Admission

Applications will be carefully reviewed based on a combination of several criteria:

•  Well defined motivation to pursue graduate study in business and the potential to achieve leadership positions in management

•  Demonstrated a high level of academic achievement.  The entire undergraduate record will be examined for course content as well as for grades

•  Aptitude for graduate business education, indicated by satisfactory performance in an interview

•  Satisfactory knowledge in computing.

MBA (Marketing) and MBA (Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour)

Applicants must meet any of the following entry requirements:

1. Possess a bachelor’s degree with at least 2nd class lower division pass in any field of study from a recognised institution

2. Pass a selection interview

3. In exceptional cases, applicants with third class division passes who are already employed in HR and Marketing related fields and demonstrate the capacity to cope with the programme may be considered for admission. Such applicants must write and pass the selection examination and an interview.

M.Phil Fashion Design and Textiles

The Master of Philosophy Programme in Fashion Design and Textiles is designed for holders of:

i.   B.Sc, B.A, B.Ed, B. Tech or related degrees in Fashion Design, Textiles and Home Economics with at least second class (lower division).

ii.  MTech in Fashion Design and Textiles Education.

iii. Letters of recommendation from two people who are familiar with the applicants’ academic work;

iv.  Applicants with Master of Technology Fashion Design and Textiles qualification will enrol in the second year of the Master of Philosophy in Fashion Design and Textiles programme and may be required to audit some additional courses.

v.   Foreign applicants must first submit copies of their academic qualifications to the National Accreditation Board of Ghana (at their own cost) for verification before attaching them to their application.

M.PHIL POLITICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION

i. Candidates applying for the programme should have a Political Science major (First Degree) or combined Political Science with another subject and must have attained at least a 2nd Class Lower Division.

ii. Candidates with M.Ed in Political Science from a recognized University can also apply for a 1-year top-up programme in Political Science Education.

iii. Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.

MASTER OF ARTS IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES

i. The entry requirements for the M.A. in Communication and Media Studies is a

good bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division.

ii. Applicants with a preference for the Communication Skills option must have a background in Language Study; preferably the English Language Programme at the bachelor’s level.

i. Applicants who obtain a CGPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are

desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. programme are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition.

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES

i. Applicant must possess a minimum CGPA of 3.0 or better at the Master’s Level in Communication and Media Studies.

ii. The programme is a 1-Year Top-Up programme.

M.PHIL SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

The following are eligible to apply for admission as candidates for the Master of Philosophy programme in Social Studies Education:

i. A good Bachelor’s degree (i.e 2.2 or better) in Social Studies or relevant field of study (Geography, Economics, History, Political Science, Development Studies, etc) from a recognized university.

ii. Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.

1-YEAR TOP-UP TO M.PHIL PROGRAMMES

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT

a) Applicants must possess:

i. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Educational Administration and Management or related discipline.

ii. G.P.A.of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. (Educational Administration) programme.

b) Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

a) Applicants must possess:

i. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Special Education from the University of Education, Winneba or related field.

ii. Professional qualification equivalent to a good bachelor’s degree. The professional qualification must also be in the subject/discipline into which the admission is being sought.

b. An academic transcript shall be required for admission.

c. Must pass the selection interview.

d. G.P.A.of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed.  Special Education Programme.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL IN COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY

a) Applicants must possess:

i. M.Ed./MA./M.Sc. in Psychology, Counselling, Social work, Sociology, Nursing and Pastoral Counselling or Theology from a recognised accredited institution

ii. CGPA of 2.5 or better.

iii. Must also pass the selection interview.

b) Foreign applicants must have qualifications equivalent to bullet “a” and must be able to read and write in English. Certificates of prospective applicants will be verified and authenticated by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).

c) The 1-year programme will be run on weekends (January to December).

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN SCHOOL SUPERVISION

a) Applicants must possess:

i. M.Ed./MA./M.Sc. in Psychology, Counselling, Social work, Sociology, Nursing and Pastoral Counselling or Theology from a recognised accredited institution

ii. CGPA of 2.5 or better.

iii. Must also pass the selection interview.

b) Foreign applicants must have qualifications equivalent to bullet “a” and must be able to read and write in English. Certificates of prospective applicants will be verified and authenticated by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).

c) The 1-year programme will be run on weekends. (January to December).

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP PROGRAMME FROM M.A. TO M.PHIL IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES

a) Applicants must possess:

i. M.A. degree in Ghanaian Language Studies or related discipline from the University of Education, Winneba or recognized institution.

b) Applicants with the following qualifications are also eligible to apply:

i. M.A. in Linguistics.

ii. M.A. in Ghanaian Language Studies.

iii. M.A. in Linguistics with courses in Ghanaian Language.

iv. Graduate Diploma in Linguistics.

c. Applicant(s) must also pass the selection interview.

d. G.P.A.of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed.  Ghanaian Languages Programme.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN FRENCH.

a. Applicants must possess:

i. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in French from the University of Education, Winneba or another recognised university.

ii. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in French.

iii. G.P.A.of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. French Education Programme.

b. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN TESL

a. Applicants must possess:

i. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in TESL or English from the University of Education, Winneba or another recognised university.

ii. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in TESL or English.

iii. G.P.A.of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. TESL Programme.

b. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A. TO M.PHIL IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES.

a. Applicants must possess:

i. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Communication and Media Studies (Business Communication/Media Studies/Communication Skills) from the University of Education, Winneba or another recognised university.

ii. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. in  Communication and Media Studies (Business Communication/Media Studies/Communication Skills)

iii. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. TESL Programme.

b. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN ENGLISH EDUCATION.

a. Applicants must possess:

i. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in English from the University of Education, Winneba or another recognised university.

ii. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. in  English.

iii. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A./M.Ed. English Education Programme.

b. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL IN SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

a. Applicants must possess:

i. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Social Studies from the University of Education, Winneba or another recognised university.

ii. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. in Social Studies.

iii. G.P.A.of not less than 3.0 from M.Ed. Social Studies Programme.

b. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.TECH. TO M.PHIL. IN WOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME.

Entry requirements for admission of students:

A candidate must meet the following requirements for admission:

•  Master’s degree holders in Technology, Technical, or Sciences.

•  Must pass an admission selection interview

•  Candidates shall be required to register for some courses and conduct their research work (Thesis) as determined by the Faculty Graduate Board

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP PROGRAMME FROM M.A. TO M.PHIL IN CONFLICTS, HUMAN RIGHTS AND PEACE STUDIES

a. Applicants must possess:

i. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. (Master of Arts) from the University of Education, Winneba or other recognized Universities.

ii. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in Master of Arts from University of Education, Winneba or other recognized Universities.

b. Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their intended research, which will be presented to the second-year regular M.Phil. (Human Rights) Students

c. Applicant(s) must also pass the selection interview.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A./M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN GHANAIAN LANGUAGES STUDIES.

a. Applicants must possess:

i. a minimum degree of 2nd Class Lower Division in any of the Ghanaian Languages Education from the University of Education, Winneba or another recognised university.

ii. G.P.A. of not less than 3.0 from M.A. in Ghanaian Language Studies.

b. Applicants with M.A. in Ghanaian Language (which the applicant has chosen to study) with courses in Linguistics can also apply.

c. Applicant(s) must pass the selection interview.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED. TO M.PHIL IN GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION

i. Applicants must possess a C.G.P.A. of not less than 2.5 from the M.Ed (Geography) programme from the University of Education, Winneba and other recognized universities.

ii. Pass a selection interview at the Departmental level.

iii. Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their intended research, which will be presented to the second-year regular M.Phil. (Geography with Education) students.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING

a. Applicants must possess:

i. M.Ed./MA./M.Sc. in Psychology, Counselling, Social work, Sociology, Nursing and Pastoral Counselling or Theology from a recognised accredited institution

ii. CGPA of 2.5 or better.

iii. Must also pass the selection interview.

b. Foreign applicants must have qualifications equivalent to bullet “a” and must be able to read and write in English. Certificates of prospective applicants will be verified and authenticated by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).

c. Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their intended research.

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN SCIENCE EDUCATION

i. Applicants must possess a C.G.P.A. of not less than 2.5 from M.Ed. (Science Education or other related areas from the University of Education, Winneba and other recognized universities.

ii. Pass a selection interview at the Departmental level.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.A/ M.ED.TO M.PHIL. IN POLITICAL SCIENCE

i. Candidates must possess a good first degree in Political Science or in a related Discipline.

ii. Candidates should attain 2nd Class lower Division or better.

iii. Candidates with M.A. or M. Ed in Political Science or related areas from recognised universities can also apply.

iv. Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP  M.A. /M. ED. TO M.PHIL IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Applicants must possess:

i. Master of Arts/Education degree in Educational Leadership with CGPA of not less than 3.0

ii. Pass the selection interview.

 

1-YEAR TOP-UP M.TECH/MSC./MA TO M.PHIL IN FASHION DESIGN AND TEXTILES.

Applicant Must:

a. Possess a good first degree in any discipline from a recognized institution

b. Be a Member of a recognized Professional institution, like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Harbour, Armed Forces, Health Services and the Districts, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies without a first degree but have five or more years of working experience.

 

NB.  ALL FOREIGN DEGREES MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN INTERPRETATION FROM THE NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BOARD.
