NHIF Self Care Portal

NHIF Selfcare Portal. Access the National Hospital Insurance Fund portal to register and apply for health insurance services via the NHIF portal. Pay for your NHIF monthly contributions using mobile money through the NHIF mobile app, USSD short code, or the NHIF Self Care portal.

Requirements for NHIF Registration

Below are the documents and information required during the NHIF registration process
  • National ID Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Mobile Phone Number
  • Employer’s NHIF Code if Employed
  • Your County
  • Nearest NHIF Office

You can access all NHIF self-care services using one of the channels below

How to Register for NHIF Account online

Follow the guideline below to open your NHIF account online using the web portal

  • Access the NHIF registration portal
  • Enter your national ID number and date of birth
  • Click on the submit button
  • A one-time pin (OTP) will be sent to your phone for confirmation
  • Enter the  pin to complete the process

NB: After registration, you will receive an NHIF member number by SMS. 

Open NHIF Account on phone using the Shortcode

You can dial *155# on your phone to register for your NHIF account using the steps below

  1. Dial *155# on your phone
  2. Select option 1 – Registration
  3. Provide all the required details
  4. Make payment
  5. Submit to be a member

How to Login to NHIF Self Care Portal

  1. Access the NHIF Self Registration Portal
  2. Enter your ID Number
  3. Input your National ID and Year of Birth
  4. Click the Continue button to complete the registration

How to pay for NHIF using Mpesa

Follow the steps below to pay for your NHIF services and monthly contributions with your Mpesa mobile money.

  1. Login to via USSD/Mobile App
  2. Click on Payment
  3. Select the Type of Payment
  4. Enter the Amount to Pay
  5. Enter your Phone number to Pay from
  6. Await MPESA PIN Prompt on paying the Mobile phone

How to Check NHIF Card Status

You can check the NHIF statement status of your card by following the steps below

  • Dialing *155#  on your phone
  • Send a text message with the format [ID (space) Your ID Number] e.g. (ID 12345678) to 1550
  • An sms will be sent to you with the status of your card details

Choose your preferred NHIF Hospital

You can choose the hospital of choice for Principal Member and Dependants. To select a Hospital follow these steps

  1. Log in to Web/Mobile App or via USSD
  2. Click Choose Facility
  3. Select Member/Dependant
  4. Select County
  5. Select a Hospital in the selected County
  6. Submit to Save Choice of Hospital

Change Chosen Hospital via NHIF Portal

follow the steps below to change your chosen hospital for all principal members and dependents.

  1. Log in to Web/Mobile App or via USSD
  2. Click on Change Facility
  3. Select Member/Dependant
  4. Select County
  5. Choose a Hospital in the selected County
  6. Submit to Save Change of Hospital

  • Select support option
  • Log in via Mobile App then select support
  • Call 8888 Toll-Free
